Dealer Offered Less Than You Expected? Here’s How to Check
The dealer’s number feels low. Check what they priced and get another offer before deciding.
You came in expecting more. The dealer gives you a number, and you’re thinking, “That’s it?” Before accepting a trade-in offer in Montreal, check what went into it. You don’t need an argument at the dealership. You need another price and a fair comparison.
To assess a dealership offer in Montreal, first make sure you’re comparing the same car, the same condition and the same type of transaction.
Check what the dealer actually priced
Ask which trim, drivetrain, kilometres and equipment were used in the assessment. A base model and a higher trim aren’t interchangeable. Bring up included winter wheels, service records or factory packages if they were missed, without assuming those extras add their original purchase cost to the offer.
Then ask whether the figure is firm, subject to inspection or tied to buying another vehicle. Request a written breakdown of any proposed deductions.
Compare offers, not just advertisements
A similar car advertised online for more money isn’t proof that yours should receive that amount. Retail asking prices and purchase offers serve different purposes. A dealer may account for reconditioning and resale costs when making an offer.
Use a valuation range as a starting point, then request another purchase offer using the same description and mileage. Keep a simple comparison: amount offered, conditions, deductions, payment timing and how long the offer remains valid.
Buying another car? Check the total
If you’re trading in while buying another vehicle, ask the dealership to show the total transaction with and without the trade. Applicable tax treatment can affect the comparison. A higher standalone offer doesn’t necessarily create the better overall result.
Get another offer before saying yes
You don’t have to argue that the dealership is wrong. A separate offer gives you another option to evaluate. At Car Buyers Montreal, you can request a direct purchase offer without committing to another car.
Get an offer for your car, then compare the actual terms before choosing how to sell.
