Selling Your Car

Sell Privately, Trade It In or Sell to Us? Compare What You Keep

Look at the money left in your pocket, the time involved and the cost of your next car.

The dealer’s made an offer. A friend says you’d get more on Marketplace. You’d rather have the car sold than spend your week answering messages. When comparing a private sale, trade-in or car buyer in Montreal, look at what you’ll keep and what you’ll have to do to get it.

No selling method guarantees the highest return for every vehicle. Give yourself a consistent way to compare the options before choosing one.

Private sale: you handle the buyers

Selling privately lets you choose an asking price and speak with potential buyers yourself. You also manage advertising, questions, viewings and the transaction. The amount you hope to receive is still an asking price until a buyer agrees.

Consider your available time and any preparation expenses. If you’re comfortable managing the process and don’t have a tight deadline, it may be an option worth exploring.

Trade-in: check the whole deal

A trade-in is connected to another vehicle transaction. Ask the dealership to show the replacement car’s price, trade allowance, taxes and other charges separately. This makes it easier to see what changes if you sell your current car elsewhere.

Under the conditions described by Revenu Québec, a qualifying trade-in reduces the amount on which GST and QST are calculated. Check the treatment that applies to your transaction instead of comparing the trade allowance with a standalone offer in isolation.

Direct buyer: sell without buying another car

A direct buyer gives you a purchase proposal without requiring a online ad or another car purchase. Review any inspection conditions, proposed deductions, payment timing and pickup arrangements.

This option can suit an owner who wants another price to consider but doesn’t want to manage a private listing. It’s still worth asking what the offer includes.

Compare what you’ll actually keep

Use the same vehicle description for each buyer. Compare money you keep, timing and remaining conditions. A higher proposed amount may matter less if you must spend more to achieve it or it depends on terms you can’t meet.
