Maintenance & Preparation
Should You Fix the Car Before Selling It?
Before paying for repairs, find out whether they’ll put more money in your pocket when you sell.
You’re ready to sell, but there’s a scratch on the bumper, a warning light or a repair you’ve been putting off. Do you fix everything first? Before spending money on repairs before selling your car, find out what the work would actually change. A bigger bill doesn’t guarantee a better deal.
If you’re selling a used car in Montreal, the useful question is how a proposed repair changes the money you keep, not simply whether the car will look better afterward.
Find out what needs fixing
Write down the issues you know about and get a repair estimate where appropriate. Describe the symptoms accurately if the cause has not been diagnosed. Don’t assume every warning light means a minor fix, and ask a qualified mechanic about safety concerns before driving.
Give a buyer an honest description of the car. You can then ask whether completing a particular repair would change the offer enough to justify its cost and the time involved.
Will you get that money back?
Say a repair would cost $1,200. If it only improves an actual purchase offer by $600, you would spend more than you recover. If nobody’s told you what the repair would add to an offer, you’re spending money on a guess.
The same thinking applies to detailing, cosmetic work and replacement accessories. You don’t need to erase every scratch before asking what the car is worth.
Make the car easy to assess
Remove personal clutter, take clear photos and gather relevant records. A buyer should be able to see the interior and understand what maintenance has already been completed. Keep invoices for recent work, but don’t expect reimbursement dollar for dollar.
Show the damage as well as the good parts. A scratch that turns up at inspection is still a scratch, and now you have to revisit the price.
Ask before spending
Car Buyers Montreal can start the assessment from your car’s details and follow up about its condition. Tell us about any planned repair before paying for work solely to prepare for a sale. Whether we can purchase the car depends on the specific vehicle.
