Selling Your Car in Montreal? Get These 7 Things Ready

Your kilometres, keys, records and a few honest photos. Get the basics together before asking for a price.

Thinking of selling your car in Montreal? Start with the basics, not a big detailing bill. A few clear photos, the right kilometres and an honest description save everyone time. Whether you’re replacing the car or just tired of paying to keep one parked, here’s what to get ready.

1. Write down the exact car’s details

Record the year, make, model, trim, drivetrain and current kilometres. If you’re unsure about the trim, check the original purchase documents or ask the manufacturer’s dealership using the VIN. Avoid guessing from a badge or a similar online listing.

2. Make a list of known issues

Include warning lights, body damage, previous repairs and anything that doesn’t work properly. Distinguish what you know from what you suspect. “Air conditioning stopped cooling last month” is more useful than an unconfirmed repair diagnosis.

3. Gather the records you already have

Collect service invoices, relevant repair records and both sets of keys if available. Organize them by date so the buyer can understand what was done. Don’t delay an initial message simply because your records are incomplete.

4. Take a useful set of photos

Show the exterior, interior, odometer and visible damage in good light. Remove personal items that obscure the seats or cargo area. Photos should help someone price the car, not conceal the areas they will notice during inspection.

5. Check your financing situation

If the car is financed or leased, contact the lender or lessor for the information relevant to a sale. Your regular payment amount isn’t a substitute for a current payout or buyout figure.

6. Decide what comes with the car

List winter wheels, charging cables, roof racks and other accessories you intend to include. Make that list consistent across every offer request so buyers are pricing the same package.

7. Set a realistic deadline

Know when you can make the car available for inspection and handover. Mention whether you need another car first. An offer and the final transfer are separate steps, so discuss both.
