They Lowered Your Car Offer After Inspection. Now What?
Ask what changed and get the deductions in writing before accepting the new price.
You got an offer, made time for the appointment and thought the sale was nearly done. Then they give you a lower number. If your car offer is reduced after inspection, ask what changed before deciding. Especially if you’d already told the buyer about the damage they’re now pointing to.
Check what the first number meant
Was it an estimate, a conditional offer or a confirmed purchase price? Review the wording, expiry date and inspection conditions. Also check the details you submitted: trim, mileage, accident history and condition descriptions can affect an assessment.
Save the original offer and your answers. If you disclosed a scratch or mechanical issue from the beginning, you should be able to point to that record instead of relying on memory.
Ask for a specific explanation
Try: “Please show me the finding that changed the offer, the amount of the adjustment and whether any other deductions remain.” A clear answer should identify the issue rather than repeating that the car is worth less.
Ask to see photos, an inspection note or a relevant estimate. A new mechanical finding, a disagreement about damage severity and a missing accessory are different things. Treat them separately.
Look at the new price before deciding
Work out the amount you would actually receive after every agreed fee or deduction. If you have another offer, compare its conditions too. A higher uninspected estimate isn’t automatically a better completed deal.
Don’t accept solely because you took time off or travelled to the appointment. Check what you’ve signed and what obligations exist before deciding whether to go ahead, negotiate or obtain advice about a dispute.
Reduce surprises on the next assessment
Provide current photos, an accurate odometer reading and a direct description of known issues. Ask whether the quote includes pickup, what could change after inspection and when the price becomes final. Keep the response.
At Car Buyers Montreal, start by sending your car’s details and discuss condition during follow-up. Ask us the same questions you would ask any buyer. You should understand the offer and remaining checks before making your decision.
