Your Lease Buyout Looks Low. Is It Worth Buying the Car to Sell It?
Compare the full buyout cost with a real offer before putting your own money into the car.
Your lease is nearly done. You check what similar cars are listed for and think, “I could buy mine out and sell it for more.” Maybe. Before a lease buyout in Quebec, get the full amount in writing and a real purchase offer. The gap between two advertised numbers isn’t money in your pocket yet.
Ask the leasing company for the full buyout
The leasing company owns the vehicle during the lease. Contact it for a written buyout quote valid for the date you’re considering. Ask what taxes, contractual fees and administrative steps apply, and whether a third-party purchase is permitted.
Don’t assume a buyer can simply pay the amount shown beside “residual value” in your agreement. An early buyout can differ from an end-of-term purchase. The Office de la protection du consommateur explains lease cancellation options; your contract and leasing company’s current instructions still matter.
Use an offer, not an advertisement
Find out what someone would actually pay for your vehicle, with its mileage, condition and history. Ask what inspection conditions remain and when the offer expires. A listing for a cleaner car at a dealer isn’t a commitment to buy yours.
Then compare that offer with the complete buyout cost, any financing cost and the agreed expenses of selling. Keep the tax and ownership steps visible in your calculation instead of assuming they cancel themselves out.
What if the sale falls through?
Imagine, purely as an example, that the expected sale leaves $1,500 after all known costs. What happens if inspection reduces the offer by $1,000 or the buyer backs out? Would you still want to own the car and carry the cost while finding another buyer?
Also check the timing. An offer that expires this week may not survive a buyout process that takes longer. Get answers before paying the leasing company.
Ask about your specific lease
Car Buyers Montreal reviews lease buyouts case by case. Send your car’s details, then share the leasing company’s requirements during follow-up. A possible purchase needs to fit the contract and transaction process; a promising price alone isn’t enough.
