Quebec Paperwork
An Ontario Buyer Wants Your Car. What Happens Next?
Sort out plates, insurance, transport and Quebec paperwork before agreeing to meet halfway.
Someone in Ontario wants your car and the price sounds right. Then comes the question of meeting halfway. Before planning the drive, work out the paperwork. Selling a Quebec car to an Ontario buyer means checking how the car will leave, who’s handling what and what you need to finish on your side.
Start with where the car is registered
Tell the buyer the current registration province and any relevant vehicle status. Explain known damage and provide the vehicle information they need to check Ontario requirements. Don’t promise that the car will meet another province’s inspection requirements unless you have the evidence to support it.
The fact that you drive it around Montreal every day doesn’t prove it meets another province’s registration requirements.
Agree on transport before agreeing on pickup
Ask how the buyer intends to move the vehicle: drive it with the appropriate authorization or arrange transport. They should confirm registration and insurance requirements with the relevant authorities and their insurer. You should separately confirm your Quebec obligations.
Don’t offer to leave your plates or insurance in place as a casual favour. If the proposed arrangement depends on paperwork being completed later, clarify the risks and correct procedure before proceeding.
Budget for the whole transaction
Write down who pays for transport, any agreed inspection and other transaction costs. A slightly higher offer may leave you with less if you also agree to deliver the car, take time off and make a second trip after a paperwork problem.
Ask for the buyer’s inspection conditions before travelling. “I’ll decide when I see it” is different from an agreed purchase price subject to specific checks.
Keep proof and close the Quebec file properly
Keep the signed sale agreement, payment records and the documents needed for the relevant registration process. The SAAQ explains cancellation for vehicles licensed or sold outside Quebec. Follow the route that matches your situation rather than assuming the buyer’s registration automatically completes your responsibilities.
Before committing to the extra coordination, get a Montreal purchase offer. Compare what you would actually receive and what each route requires of you. An extra few hundred dollars is worth weighing against the driving, time off and paperwork you’d be taking on.
