The Car’s Almost Sold. When Do You Cancel the Insurance?
Plan the insurance change around the actual sale, especially if there’s still a test drive or pickup to arrange.
You’re barely driving the car anymore and you’d like one less bill. Understandable. But before you cancel car insurance after selling, pin down when the car will actually leave. A buyer saying “I’ll take it” on Tuesday doesn’t mean you can stop thinking about coverage before Saturday’s pickup.
Call before you remove coverage
Tell your insurer that you’re selling and explain whether the car will still be driven, shown to buyers or taken for inspection. Ask what coverage is needed until the transaction is complete. If it’s parked for an extended period, ask about suitable options rather than simply cancelling.
Don’t assume a buyer’s insurance automatically protects your vehicle during every part of a test drive. Our test-drive guide lists the questions worth asking before an appointment.
Get the cancellation details in writing
Ask how to submit the change, which effective date to use and what proof the insurer needs. Quebec’s Infoinsurance explains that cancellation can be requested in writing and may involve a penalty under the policy’s cancellation table. Its policy cancellation guide is a useful starting point.
Request the actual calculation for your policy. A refund, remaining balance or fee depends on your circumstances; don’t assume you receive every unused day’s premium back without adjustment.
Make sure the dates match
Record when the sale and vehicle handover are completed. Confirm the relevant transfer steps separately. Changing a registration record and changing an insurance contract are different tasks, so ask each organization what it needs.
If pickup is delayed after you’ve arranged cancellation, contact your insurer before the coverage ends. Don’t drive the car on an assumption that yesterday’s plan still applies.
Buying another car soon?
Ask whether your existing policy can be changed to cover the replacement and when that coverage begins. Provide accurate dates and car’s details. Also ask how any period without a vehicle would affect your options.
When you request an offer from Car Buyers Montreal, discuss the expected completion arrangements. A confirmed handover plan gives you something concrete to coordinate with your insurer.
